Dominoe Ch’yea- Bottled Emotion’s Mixtape Review
When my editor handed me this mixtape last week, and told me it was a singer/rapper, the first thought that popped into my head was, “oh god I am NOT the right person to do this review.” At the current moment, music is not at it’s best, and “copycat-ism” is at an all time high, so the last thing I wanted to do was sit and listen to the American version of Drake. However, once I slid on my beats and pushed play on my ipod, my opinion couldn’t have changed faster.
Dominoe Ch’yea is an artist with a very unique sound. If I had to compare him to an artist that’s already out there, I would put him as a mix between Matthew Santos and Frank Ocean. Nevertheless, Dominoe has a voice that definitely captures and holds your attention, whether you like it or not! The mixtape itself is composed of several different covers from various artists, including Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Beyonce, and ironically enough, Drake. Adding his own twist to the majority of these songs, he almost outshines the original artists, and definitely proves himself to be a contender in the music game.
With today’s radio being crowded with “dance-hop” and cliché R&B artists who all sound the same singing, this mixtape is a breath of fresh air. Not because of the song selection, or the covers of the most popular songs out right now, but because of the talent exhibited, the rawness of the whole project, and that awesome feeling you get when you listen to the songs, thinking,” THIS is music!” I urge everyone to listen to this mixtape and let me know what your opinion of it is! I know you won’t be disappointed.
